The Gundogs
Baker's Beau and Baker's Beignet

A Brief Overview
Both Beau and Ben are American Brittanys. The Brittany breed originated in France and is believed to have been the result of breeding English Setters and Pointers with the local French flushing dogs of the Brittany region. In 1907, a breed club was established in France. As dogs slowly began being brought to the United States, the breed began to be "Americanized". Essentially, the breed evolved and changed with the selection of individuals more adept at the North American hunting style. On top of the selection for such individuals, it is also believed that there were instances of English Setters and even Pointers being introduced into the American gene pool. What resulted is a larger, slightly leggier dog. The American Brittany's coat is less wavy; they have a more rounded forehead, a pink nose, and black colored coats have been removed from the coat color standard.
American Brittanys should be about 40-45 lbs, stand no more than 20 1/2" at the withers, and be some combination of Orange/White/Liver. Their coat should be medium dense and soft. Their demeanor should be pleasant, and their intelligence should be easily apparent. American Brittanys are bird dogs through and through. They can hunt on the prairie, in the woods, and through the cattails. They tend to have a very well-developed pointing instinct, and in my experience, both dogs came out of the box steady until the bird was flushed. They can be serviceable waterfowl dogs in the appropriate conditions.
